LFECHS enjoy a local musical

Before the Christmas break, the 9th graders in Mr. Garza’s English class enjoyed a Christmas musical entitled “Tejano Christmas Carol,” at the Pharr Community Theater. The play was about Christmas miracles based on a story written by Charles Dickens, an English novelist and social critic who created some of the world's best-known fictional characters, and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. Over 40 students had the privilege of attending the play, “the purpose of the students attending the musical gave them the opportunity to put what they read into reality to play out in front of them. It gave the students an opportunity to let their imaginations run wild,” expressed Mr. Garza. “It’s one thing to read a novel, but it’s totally different to see the novel play out in front of you. It had a special spin on it that was based on the Mexican culture that a lot of our students could relate to here in the Valley. It was a fun history lesson. For instance, one of the spirits was Selena, the famous Latina singer. Another was “Las Soladeras,” the women who aided the Revolutionary war with Poncho Villa,” he explained passionately. Mr. Garza thought the musical was well rounded and that his students could really relate to it. It was funny, it had music, it was educational… he learned that a number of his students had never even been to a play, more less a musical. That made it more special to them. With all of the fun that they had, he hopes that he can take his students to another play or musical very soon.
