High school choir provides students an opportunity to develop their vocal skills, learn music theory, and perform both as individuals and as a group. Competitions provide an excellent opportunity for young singers to showcase their talent, build teamwork, and grow as musicians. Mr. Ashley is very proud to have had 10 students make the TMEA Region 14 Region Choir, 6 students advance to the TMEA Pre-Area contest, and 2 of his singers advanced to the TMEA Area Contest- Faith Chavarria, 10th grader and Soprano, and Hailo Garcia, 11th grader, Tenor. If they make one of those 6 chairs at Area, they will be a member of the TMEA Small School All-State Choir in January. “No matter the outcome, I will be proud of them. They have worked tirelessly and have given it their all,” expressed Mr. Ashley. They will then perform on February 15th at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in front of at least 4000 people. The holiday season is a fun time in choir. They are currently working on their Christmas music for their concert December 12th, December 7th, they have a small concert at the First Baptist Church La Feria Annual Ladies Christmas Fellowship Tea and a performance at the Lighting of the Christmas tree Thursday 21st. I enjoy the Christmas time, spirit and singing the music, it’s a joyous time when we all get together. “Seeing the kids accomplish their musical goals is what makes my job amazing. I love that my choir room is a safe place for them, it’s their home on campus. They all have one thing in common, they have a passion for music and singing. That to me, is beautiful and what makes my job fulfilling.” It is apparent that being able to watch that growth, success and to be a safe space for his students is what drives Mr. Ashley.
