As students explore potential career paths, the hands-on learning experience of a Dental Assisting Program offers an invaluable opportunity for those interested in health sciences. Our school’s Dental Assisting Program is helping students gain real-world skills, opening doors to various career opportunities in the growing healthcare industry. Ms. Young is a Registered Dental Hygienist prior to becoming a teacher at La Feria ECHS, and is very excited to start the first year of the program through the ACE program after school and open new opportunities for La Feria ISD students. “What is unique about this program is that they are the only ones offering a certification in an after school setting, and they can leave this program with a job making upwards of $36,000 a year right out of high school! It is also ranked number 5 in jobs with work and life satisfaction, and I love that for my students,” exclaimed Ms. Young. This job gives you the opportunity to really get to know your patients because you get to see them more than one time a year. The hours are also nice, typically, you work 8-5, and that is something a lot of people look for, and that’s called Private Health. Ms. Young had some advice for her students, “never stop learning, and don’t get in your own way.” You could tell that not only she had a passion for dentistry, but her students too. Some were shy, others had loads of expression and so much to say, Senior Ariana Herrera expressed, “this is real hands-on experience that we get to obtain now in high school, versus just reading from a textbook and writing papers. We are able to get certified before we even go to college and save money.” The future is bright. The school’s Dental Assisting Program is an excellent way for students to gain exposure to the medical field without committing to years of education. It’s a great starting point for those looking to pursue a career in health care or even those who simply want to gain practical, transferable skills.
